The Orphan Carousel, 2021
Memorial To The Rescuing Kindertransports of 1938 − 39, Publical memorial (permanent installation), Frankfurt, 2021
In 1938 and 1939, 10,000 Jewish children from Germany and Austria found refuge in Britain. They managed to escape, but their family members were left behind, many of them murdered in the Holocaust. Near Frankfurt’s central station, where parents and children bid each other farewell, Yael Bartana’s Orphan Carousel (installed in late 2021) commemorates rescue and loss. Members of the public are allowed to sit on the playground carousel, which is built in a 1930s style and does rotate, although slowly.
