Memorial To Homosexuals Persecuted Under Nazism, 2018
Berlin, 2018
The cuboid memorial, designed by Elmgreen & Dragset and inaugurated in 2007, has an opening through which visitors view scenes of gay and lesbian couples kissing. Yael Bartana directed the film shown there in 2018 for the memorial’s tenth anniversary. Kissing same-gender couples rotate in front of a collage depicting images from the history of anti-homosexual persecution as well as struggles by the queer community in Germany for equal rights. The loving couples appear translucent, inscribed in and ennobled by history.
